The Pease name is common in Eastern England. One theory is that the name had its' foundation in the Latin language, and was originally written as Pise by the Italians. The family was also found in Germany in 972, where the spelling of the name was Pies or Pees. A coat of arms of the Saxon ancestors was granted during the reign of Otto II, Emperor of Germany from 972-981. The crest has an eagle's head crased, the beak holding a stalk of pea haulm. The family name motto is Optiome de Patria Meruit. Making their way into England, members of the family made the name conform to Anglo- Saxon as Pease about the year 1000. Other than the Great Baddow Pease family, the earliest English vital record found, was in Hull, England of John Pease marrying Jun 09, 1583, at Holy Trinity Church in Hull, Margaret Wilson. It is not known whether this family is related to the Pease family from Great Baddow. The earliest records of the Pease family from Great Baddow, county Essex, England start with:

The First Generation in America

1 Robert Pease, son of Robert and Margaret (King) Pease, one of the immigrant ancestors of the Pease family in America; bpt. Oct 28, 1589 in Great Baddow, county Essex, England; d. Oct 27, 1644 in Salem, MA; m. (1) Lydia, (possibly Lydia West). She probably died before he made the journey to America. This marriage to Lydia West is not proven, and is not mentioned in the early Pease genealogies. Robert's baptism is not recorded in St. Mary's. He came to New England in the ship Francis, John Cutting, master, sailing from Ipswich, England the last of Apr 1634. The ship landed at Boston, MA without the loss of a single passenger. Robert was accompanied by his brother John, his eldest son Robert, a Miss Clark, aged fifteen, who was the daughter of a fellow passenger, and a Miss Greene, aged fifteen, perhaps a servant. Robert Pease disappeared from records from the time he landed at Boston until three years later in Salem, MA, where in Jan 1637, he and his brother John had grants of land, Robert receiving ten acres. Margaret Pease, widow and mother of Robert and John, also emigrated to America, and died Sep 01, 1644 in Salem. In her will dated Sep 01, 1642, proved Jan 01, 1645, she mentions a grandchild, John, son of Robert. Children of Robert and Lydia Pease, born and baptized in Great Baddow, Essex, England:

1.1 Robert bpt. Apr 1630 d.
1.2 John bpt. Feb 11, 1632 d. Jul 08, 1689 Enfield, CT

Robert's second wife, Marie, whose possible maiden name was Rodans, and the other children arrived in New England on a later ship. Marie, which is French for Mary, may have been born in Great Baddow, and her parents were probably Protestant refugees from France. Robert Pease and Marie were admitted to the Salem Church Oct 01, 1643, and two weeks later, three of their children were baptized there. Marie, widow of Robert Pease was administratix, and the inventory of his estate was filed Aug 27, 1644. Children of Robert and Marie Pease baptized in Salem, MA:

1.3 Nathaniel b. 1634 d.
1.4 Sarah b. 1642 d.
1.5 Mary b. Aug 15,1643 d. ca. 1683 Salem, MA

There may have been another son of Robert and Lydia or Marie, Isaac Pease, born and baptized in England, who did not have a family.

After Robert Pease died, Marie m. (2) Richard Haines of Beverly, MA.

2 John Pease, son of Robert and Margaret (King) Pease, one of the immigrant ancestors of the Pease family in America; b. 1607 in Great Baddow, county Essex, England; bpt. Nov 20, 1608 in Saint Mary's Church, Great Baddow; d. between 1677 and Jun 03, 1689 in Edgartown, MA; m. Lucy. She was the daughter of Margaret, and step daughter of Margaret's second husband, Francis Weston, who d. Jun 05, 1645 in Dorchester, MA. Francis Weston was an early leader of the colony that came to America with the Winthrop fleet. He was a deputy of the court, and owned 125 acres of land "in the direction of West Peabody." Weston's religious beliefs along with Roger Williams, had them banished from Salem to Rhode Island on Mar 12, 1638, and on Mar 03, 1643, Francis was brought back, and confined to a jail in Dorchester for heresy. He died there after being confined for two years. Mrs. Margaret Weston, in Jun 1637, was sued with her husband by William Pester for defamation. She accused the pastors of the church of hypocrisy, and was in turn accused of disorderly carriage by the church. On Jun 05, 1638, she was sentenced by the General Court to be set in the bilboes, two hours in Boston, and two hours in Salem upon a lecture day. She was also a follower of Samuel Gorton, whose religious beliefs differed with those of the authorities, and was also banished to Rhode Island. She later became "of hopelessly unsound mind." John Pease came to America in 1634 on the ship Francis with his brother Robert. Margaret Weston's fanatic beliefs, and carrying on must have been too much for her son-in-law, as it appears he took matters into his own hands. A court record of Nov 03, 1635 in Essex County states: "Ordered that John Pease of Salem shall be whipt and bound to his good behaviour for striking his mother (in-law), Mrs. Weston and deryding of her for dyvers other misdemeanors and other evill carriage." In Jan 1637, Salem, John and Robert Pease were issued grants of land, John receiving twenty acres. On Jun 18, 1644, John Pease sold to Richard Ingersoll of Salem "one house and 75 acres of land adjoyning to the fearme wheron the said Richard dwelleth." After that date, he disappears completely from the Essex county and the Salem town records. The next appearance of his name occurs in the records of Edgartown, MA, under date of Mar 23, 1647, when he sold ten acres of land at Mattakeeset to Mister John Bland. On Martha's Vineyard, John owned a house lot of ten acres of upland and two acres of meadow at the north end of the town of Great Harbor. When the home lots were distributed, he drew the first in present day Edgartown at a place now known as Pease's Point, and a street to the south of this land is Pease Point Way. After the sale of his Mattakeeset property in 1647 to John Bland, he moved to Norwich, CT, where he purchased land that he retained until his death, bequeathing it to John Junior. His home lot was bequeathed to son Thomas. John Senior returned to the island before Mar 05, 1653 when he was involved in a land suit. On Nov 07, 1653, he was elected constable, and served on a jury Sep 25, 1677. His will is dated Mar 04, 1674. Excerpts: "...me John Peas, husbandman and inhabitant uppon Martins Vineyard...being now in some measure in good health...am stricken in years and Crasy in respect of what formerly ... give to my Eldest Son James Peas twelve pence...my second son John Peas...all that was given to me at Mohegin, with that frame of a house...(to the rest of the children)...all my landes and houseing that I have upon this land Martins Vineyard to be either equally devided or valued or sold or exchanged and the price thereof Equally devided to everyone of them...my now living wife Mary shall see meet whome I make my full and whole Executrix... and I give unto Mary Peas my wife all my cattle of every sort with all my household goodes whatsoever... in witness hereunto my hand and seal. " The will was witnessed by Thomas Birchard, Kathrin Birchard, and Thomas Trappe. Children of John and Lucy (Weston) Pease born in Salem, MA:

2.1 James b. Mar 15, 1637 d. Mar 27, 1719 Edgartown, MA
2.2 John b. 1639 d.

John Pease m. (2) Mary Browning. She was the daughter of Malachai Browning; b. about 1610 in England; d. Nov 27, 1653 at the home of his friend, Robert Scott, in Boston, MA, and Mary Collier; b. about 1615; d. 1672 in Edgartown. Malachai was the owner of a large book shop in Boston. Children of John and Mary (Browning) Pease born in Edgartown, MA:

2.3 Mary b. 1649 d.
2.4 David b. d.
2.5 Abigail b. 1653 d. bef. 1711
2.6 Samuel b. 1655 d. Oct 12, 1689 or Jul 23, 1706
2.7 Thomas b. 1657 d. aft. 1748
2.8 Rebecca b. 1659 d.
2.9 Sarah b. 1661 d.
2.10 Jonathan b. 1670 d.

Mary (Browning) Pease m. (2) Jun 03, 1689, as his second wife, Thomas Creber; d. 1695. On the day of her marriage, Mary disposed of her interests in the estate of John Pease, and moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Thomas was master of the ketch John and Mary, engaged in the coastwise trade.

Note: There is a traditional story with variations of John Pease as follows: About seven to ten years before the 1641 purchase of the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket by Thomas Mayhew of Watertown, MA, a vessel from England on the way to Carolina landed on the island. (Another account was that the boat was headed for Port Penn in the Delaware). The boat anchored at what is now known as Starbuck's Neck near the present site of Edgartown. John Pease, a passenger of the vessel, was in the British Military, and was wearing his uniform which consisted of the traditional red coat. A band of Indians greeted the landing party, and Pease, as a sign of peace, offered the Chief, his coat. The Sachem was so grateful, he offered the new arrivals, a large section of land which now includes Edgartown. While the rest of the passengers continued south, John Pease, William Vinson, Thomas Trapp and Malachi Browning decided to settle on Martha's Vineyard, and built caves for the first winter in a place called Green Hollow. As the settlement grew, and more settlers arrived, John Pease kept all transactions, including the original gift of the land in a book, known as the "Black Book" because of the color of it's cover. When John died, two men went into his house, and stole the book, never to be seen again. The present day town records of Edgartown in preserved books contain dates before the record keeper transcribed them. It is supposed that some of these events were copied from the "Black Book" before it was destroyed. Without the records in the book, the Pease family lost the titles to their land. In 1853, George Cleveland, a farmer was tilling his land, and came upon the ruins of three separate underground rooms that were large enough for living quarters. The ruins were a short distance from the center of Edgartown, and near a road which is now called Pease's Point Way. These sites were supposedly the caves that those mentioned above spent the first winter in. The legend can almost certainly be proven not true because of the dates of the "landing party". Port Penn did not come into existence until after 1682; the early Pease family did not dispute any land claims with any other settler of the island; John Pease himself was in Salem from 1634 until at least 1644, although he may have visited the island after settling in Salem; and there is no evidence that he was in the British military. The earliest settlers of most areas probably did spend at least their first few months in caves or crude shelters, as building lumber was not an available commodity (see John Pease 1.2.1). There were pageants on Martha's Vineyard with scenes of early settler stories put on display by contemporary actors. The "Red Coat" story was one of more popular acts.

2.2 John Pease; b. 1639. He settled in Norwich, on his home lot, which was at the western limit of the town plot, bearing the date Nov 1659. He was somewhat of a loner as found in the court record for 1672: "John Pease complained of by the townsmen of Norwich for living alone, for idleness, and not duly attending the worship of God. The court orders that townsemen do provide that Pease be entertained into some suitable family. He paying for his board and accommodation and he employ himself in some lawful calling. Which if he reject or refuse to do, the townsemen may put him out to service in some approved family except he dispose of his accommodations and remove out of town." John Pease was still living in Norwich in 1682, where he was found in arrears for town and ministry rates, and a levy was ordered on his estate.

Children of John and Mary (Browning) Pease born in Edgartown, Massachusetts:

2.4 David Pease; b. about 1651. His wife's name is unknown, and only one known child was born in Edgartown, Massachusetts:

2.4.1 Benjamin b. 1676 d. 1747 Edgartown, MA

2.6 Samuel Pease; b. about 1655; d. either Oct 12, 1689 in Newport, RI, or Jul 23, 1706 in NH. There are two different sagas about Samuel Pease, the first being, that he was believed to be the commander of the sloop of war Mary, fitted out by the Massachusetts Colony in 1689 to protect the coast from the attacks of French pirates. The sloop was fitted with a barrel of powder, fifty pounds of small shot, and twelve guns. A twenty man all volunteer crew was under Captain Pease's command. On Oct 04, 1689, they were engaged in battle with one of three pirate vessels near Tarpaulin Cove and during the encounter, Captain Pease was "shott in severall places". He defeated the enemy, capturing vessel and crew, but his wounds were of such serious character that he was taken to Newport, RI, for treatment and "did grievously languish" until his death, and his remains are buried there. Various records concerning the affair are extant showing that he "left a widow and foure orphans in a poore and low condition," for whom collections were taken up in churches throughout the Colony. The pirates, Thomas Pound, Thomas Johnson, Eleazer Buck, John Sickterdam, William Dun, Richard Griffin, Edwarde Browne, Daniel Lunder, William Warren, and Samuel Watts were all charged with shooting Samuel Pease. Edward Browne was acquitted, the rest were found guilty, and hung. The name of Samuel's wife and records of birth of his children are non existent. If this is the true biography of Samuel Pease [2.6], his first son may be the Samuel in the second biography, but he would be too young to be on the jury in 1694. If Samuel Jr. was baptized in 1679 at an age of three or four, he could have been the Samuel in "Record #2". Not knowing the exact birth date of Nathaniel Pease [2.6.6], and not having any information on Samuel [2.6.1] only adds to the puzzle.

The other record of Samuel, is that he went to Exeter, NH, and was killed by the Indians Jul 23, 1706. A Samuel Pease was on a coroner's jury in Exeter in 1694, and on trial in Portsmouth, NH in 1695. On Jul 23, 1706, twenty Indians fell on ten Exeter men as they were mowing in a field between Exeter and the Lamphril River. Samuel Pease was among the white men killed. The administration of his estate went to Richard Hilton of Exeter on Nov 05, 1706, and his widow had a grant from the town on Feb 04, 1698, of fifty acres of land which was laid out on Oct 28, 1700 at Piscassic (Newfields) NH. The name of this Samuel's wife, may have been Elizabeth, and she remarried after his death, Jan 22, 1707 to Samuel Smith of Hampton, NH, whose grandfather, Samuel Smith, came from Martha's Vineyard. Children of Samuel Pease, born in Edgartown, MA, baptized in the South Church in Boston, MA:
